I’m starting a new series now, on the untapped essence of the Jewish people. It won’t be comparing Jewish people to non-Jewish people, as that would be politically incorrect, to say the least.
Instead, this is an exploration, and I’ll be tapping into what our destiny is all about, using some sources I’ve put together in the past and expanding on them. My intention is to reveal some things I didn’t see or know before.
In that spirit, I’m calling this series, “Restore The Jewish Glory.” And this will be a little introduction to it:
First, a quote from Ezekiel 36:24-29, “I will take you from among the nations and gather you out of all the countries and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle on you clean water. I will give you a new heart and I will place in you a new spirit. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and will give you a heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you. You will be my people and I will be your G-d.”
Second, a quote from the writings of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook, “Our truth is strong enough, but it is so overpowering and we are still unable to explain it in a clear language. In our inwardness, we understand our ideas and in the course of time our speech will also emerge from its hard exile in which it is confined. Only a people that has finished what it has started can descend from the stage of history, when its vision has already been fully disclosed to the world. Out of the inner depths, the Jewish people will yet sound the same call that was issued by the rock, from which it was hewn.”
The whole motivation of this my new exploration here is this – our historical destiny as a people is at hand. We are a nation of priests, we are a chosen people, we are a light unto the nations, and we are living in a period of time where the great majority of our people don’t buy into these times. They don’t begin to see, understand or know its own greatness and glory. Most of us cannot see that there’s anything special or unique that distinguishes us from other people in world outlooks, not at all.
So, the question is how to approach a subject that is so broad, so sensitive and yet so crucial. How can we hope to do justice to, perhaps, the most important question that exists for our people, and maybe for the whole world? And the answer is, we cannot do justice. It’s clearly beyond our capacity. But G-d can do it through us.
In that spirit then, we march forward, drawing specific topics from the following categories, and maybe we can find our way on this journey and map out some kind of path. Maybe we can develop some types of meditations by taking these ideas, one by one, and exploring what they’re all about.
These platitudes that we are meant to step up into, for the sake of our own destiny and the sake of all mankind present some challenges. Here’s a list of the challenges, the things we must work with:
- What does it mean to be a light to the nations?
- What does it mean to have a heart of flesh?
- What does it mean to be a chosen people?
- What does it mean to be a kingdom of priests?
- What does it mean to be a testifier of G-d for the whole world?
- What does it mean to be a teacher to the whole world?
- How does the land of Israel figure in to all of this?
- How does Moshiach figure in to all this?
- How does our people, the great majority of which are not observant, but very spirited (I would say)… How do they figure into all of this process?
- What is the timing involved in all this, stepping up into our destiny?
Those are a few of the questions, and obviously there are more. But let’s deal with at least one of them now.
We are a light unto the nations. What does this whole idea mean? If we were to do a Light Unto The Nations Meditation, what would it look like?
I think it would sound like this – Allow yourself to step into the future. See yourself as a proud member of a people who understand both the glory and the responsibility of being a chosen nation, a nation of global light-conveyers.
Experience the love inside of yourself that you are very inspired to share with all of humanity.
Experience yourself filled-up with light, a light that stretches from one end of the world to the other, a light that’s overflowing, a light that’s experienced as wisdom and G-dliness and love and transcendence and healing. It’s a light you’re driven to share with everyone, a light that’s received by one and all, directly and consciously, but also indirectly and subconsciously.
This is what I think the meditation would be about, and it’s not just a meditation, but a type of foresight or vision of what this state would be like. Because being a light to the nations is being someone who, when the world is in the dark, lights up a torch, a light or a beam to light up the path.
How does a person, no less than a nation, do that for the rest of the world? What comes to my mind is that person would need a universal language. We would need to have the ability to talk to anyone about all these things, and as a teacher we must know a language the students will understand, a translation of our destiny, which is Torah, into a universal kind of language of some type. That’s the first thing.
In order to be a superior kind of light, we would need to teach so that a person can come away from our teachings with absolute clarity, to know where to go, what to do, what to say and how to say it, who to be with and why to do it. They would know the answers to what baffles us all, in our private lives and in our national destiny.
That’s the challenge, and being a light unto the nations is probably much more than that.
This is a few contemplations, some highlights of Joseph’s initial years in Egypt, after being sold into slavery by his brothers. It represents some of what we learn about who Joseph is and the standards to which he was held in Parsha Miketz.
First of all, Joseph was called the Master of Dreams, and being a dreamer has everything to do with how truthful you are. We have a tradition that says the truer a person is, the way he sees things is not delusional, but is rather penetrating into reality. The more real truthful and real a person is, the more their dreams are on the level of prophecy. They reveal hidden reality, the unseen, which tells us who we are and what we are and what life is, not only in the future but right now as well.
Joseph was on that highest of highest levels, and therefore any encounter he has with a dream, whether interpreting the dreams of others or sharing his own dreams with his brothers and not getting a favorable response, is coming from a person of truth. Joseh’s Sephira of Yesod… one of the translations of that is truth.
He was a truthful person, and therefore he was able to be the channeler of dreams, which earned him the right to be the second in command of Egypt, the most powerful nation in the world at the time, and to feed the world as well. Joseph was able to penetrate the falseness of reality into the truth of reality. That’s where those dreams came from, and he was able to have them and to interpret them as well.
Although, we have to say that his dreams happened because he said, “It’s not me… I’m not the one interpreting the dreams, it’s G-d.” So, because of his submissiveness and ability to work with dreams, Joseph was elevated to the highest level. He allowed the enacting, empowering and enabling to come about, not by his own power, but by G-d’s. That’s what placed Joseph on the highest level of dream interpretation and earned him the position of second-in-command in Eqypt and the one who saved the world from famine.
This is also because of who Joseph was and the Sephira he represented (Yesod). Joseph was the foundation of wellbeing and abundance in the world. He was the “feeder” of the entire world, including not only his own brothers but all the tribes of Israel. He fed them and he was also the unifier, regardless of the fallout between him and his brothers. Ultimately, he was able to bring them into a kind of unity because of who he is and the essence of what Yesod is.
Beyond that, he, like all of his brothers and all of our Patriarchs and Matriarchs, was G-d’s right-hand army to fix up the world… Tikkun Olam, bringing the world to its rectification of Adam and Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden.
Joseph was especially important because he was the culmination. Yaakov understood that when Joseph was born in Laban’s house it would be time to face the world, to face Esav, because, as the Midrash says, “Jacob was the fire and Joseph was the flame,” and Esav is the straw that gets burned by the two of them together. Joseph is the culmination, and therefore he is able to go into the world and bring that holiness into the world, the whole purpose of creation into the world.
We also learn from Joseph’s life that he was held to the highest standards, like all our Patriarchs and Matriarchs. He was not meant to chase after his own wellbeing at all. So, when the ten years of his prison sentence came to an end and it was time for him to leave, Joseph should not have had to ask for favors from Pharoh’s ministers who were also in prison with him, the chef and the minister of drink. He asked them to put in a good word for him with Pharoh, and G-d did not look favorably on Joseph asking those guys for their help. Joseph should have trusted, as he did with the dreams, that everything is dependent upon G-d, and nobody else.
This is what we need to learn for ourselves as well: if we don’t need to make that extra effort, beyond what we really need, then don’t do it. Let G-d take care of what’s going on, and all the rest of it.
Ultimately, Joseph was the one who led the whole world at the time. People looked at him in awe, even though he hid his beauty, for the most part. Even his own brothers didn’t recognize him physically. He had a beard, and then he didn’t have a beard… They didn’t recognize him because he was the paradigm tsaddik, the paradigm righteous person. The way Joseph did it was to hide his righteousness from everybody, including his brothers. He talked to them about it, but he hid it from them as well.
When Joseph finally did reveal himself, his brothers were stunned. Not only did they see how all the pieces fit together, but they saw how a Yesod person was able to show how all the moving parts fit together. They were also able to see that all the things Joseph hid about himself became revealed, and then they were unable to speak. They were stunned.
So, these are just a few of the many areas of Joseph’s life that we should study and emulate as much as possible.
We are in the midst of a deluge, a flood, a metaphysical and very real plague-like flood here in the streets of Israel. And it seems, by the way things are possibly going, that in a short time the streets of the world as well, people want to kill Jews simply because we exist, for no other reason at all.
Don’t buy all that other propaganda about territorial disputes, including the Temple Mount, or any of that other stuff. It’s all just to play upon the diplomatic sensibilities of the world.
It’s simply that we are Jewish. That’s our cry. That’s why they want to kill us, and the same thing is true for Christians. It’s the Christian’s cry as well.
We’re at a time now where we have to pay attention to what the Torah, the Bible is telling us in this parasha of Noach or Noah. The energy of the parasha of Noah is to our advantage right now because as we all know, it’s about a flood Noah’s Ark was destined to save that seedling of humans and animals from being completely wiped-out by a worldwide flood at that time.
The parallels are strikingly clear right now, in Israel and in other countries around us, and all over the world, including Europe and America, everywhere. Right now, we ALL have to get ourselves into the Ark.
In the past, Noah’s Ark was a place of safety, a shelter from the storm, from the flood threatening to wipe out everyone and everything that wasn’t inside the Ark.
So, we need to figure out how to build our Ark and how to get inside it, to save our lives and to be protected from the flood. So, what I’d like to share with you now is a list of what I believe to be ways we can create Arks in our own lives, to save us from the flood. The Ark is the antidote to the dire danger these current floods are creating.
- We need to jump into the Ark of being constructive, as opposed to the flood, which is destructive. We need to build ourselves an Ark which is celebrating LIFE, as opposed to the flood, which celebrates death and murder. We need to get ourselves into the Ark of G-d’s real, true Word, as opposed to murder in the name of G-d.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of being in-sync with our Holy Land here, as opposed to being out-of-sync with it, which is the flood we have threatening us as well.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of Shabbat, and realize that everything that’s happening in our lives is coming from above, as opposed to the flood of thinking that the strength of our hands is really going to save us.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of Prayer, saying to G-d, “I cannot, Hashem… I can only do it if you help me.” We need to save ourselves from the flood of saying we are the ones who determine what will happen with our own fate.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of having true pleasure in the service of G-d, and in the life force of Torah and mitzvoth, as opposed to the robotic, mechanical service in the world of the flood.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of understanding, “I am a wealthy person, an immense treasure chest, full of spiritual gifts I have amassed over the last few weeks of holidays, as opposed to thinking now it’s just the same-old, same-old schedule of the past.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of knowing we are a member of an eternal, invincible people, as opposed to the mindset, the flood-type thinking that we are vulnerable to everyone’s whims and horrible designs against us.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of knowing that every little bit of goodness and overcoming of evil we do in our lives moves worlds and elicits the support of millions and billions of people rooting for us, as opposed to falling into the flood of despair.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of radical belief, 24/7, that G-d is running our lives, no matter what we think is the cause of everything that’s going on, and that it’s coming from us, as opposed to thinking everything is by chance.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of knowing that every minute of our lives is precious, as opposed to the flood of wanting to kill time.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of trust in G-d, and knowing that G-d will come through for me, just as he has endless numbers of times before, as opposed to thinking that it’s all happenstance.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of knowing, “I am a soul and I have control of all the animal parts inside of me,” just like the animals in Noah’s Ark, as opposed to thinking, “I am a human animal who can only succeed with the laws of the jungle.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of encouragement and love for everybody we see and connect with in our lives, as opposed to the flood of hate and depression.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of seeing others with the eyes of G-d, with compassion and with vision of who they can be, as opposed to seeing others as infidels, not worthy of life.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of what G-d said to Noah, “Come into the Ark and make that light shine, meaning the teva, the holy words of Torah and prayer. We must make that shine by going deeply into it, as opposed to the flood of thinking that everything is purposeless and lifeless, recital without any meaning.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of seeing goodness into being, as opposed to the opposite, which is seeing evil manifest.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of unifying with all the good, as opposed to the opposite.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of the good inclination inside ourselves, prompted by the spice of Torah, to counteract that flood of evil inclination, the Yetzer Hara.
- We need to get ourselves into the Ark of the mikvah, of purifying ourselves, to counteract the flood of impurity.
- We need to get ourselves into the act of being givers, to save ourselves from the flood of takers.
- We need to get ourselves into the act of 40 days of shelter, of going into a process and sticking with it until it gets done, just like the 40 days of the flood, as opposed to being exposed to whatever may happen in our lives and not completing them.
- We need to get into the Ark of seeing the good in people, even if it’s one little, tiny piece of good that will outshine all the bad inside of them, as opposed to the flood of the opposite.
- We need to get into the Ark of making sacred space of who we are, when we are, how we are, with whom we are, as opposed to seeing the exact opposite.
- We need to get into the Ark of talking soul and heart talk to other people, as opposed to talking hate talk, talking senseless externalities.
- We need to get into the Ark of seeing people as souls, as opposed to seeing them as enemies and something to be killed.
- We need to get into the Ark of the house of study and the house of prayer, as opposed to the flood of the opposite.
- We need to get into the Ark of modesty, as opposed to the flood of flagrancy.
- We need to get into the Ark of knowing that there is nothing else in the world, except for G-d.
Last week we began to explore the essence of TRUTH…..
We brought approaches for measuring truth and for coping with deception……
Our weekly meditation session in Jerusalem focused on how to ‘shortcut’ our way to get to our deepest inner truths [‘Emet L’Amito’]……..
This led us to a discussion of one of my favorite and most powerful personal truth indicators—‘ALLNESS’………
I tried to illustrate the Allness principle— ‘To the extent that one taps into Allness, to that extent, one is in sync. with one’s calling, one’s environment and G-d’s plan for one’s life’—in short, one’s DEEPEST TRUTH……..
The next step in our search for truth therefore is to understand how to live in ‘Allness’………
So come with me dear friend, and and let’s meditatively explore———-
1. How to SEE it everywhere and always…..
2. How to MOTIVATE yourself towards it
3. How to BECOME it
4. How to be so full of Allness inside yourself that THE WORLD OUTSIDE OF YOU BECOMES FULL OF ALLNESS
See Allness…………….Broaden your perspective of G-d’s Providence—-Begin to see things as G-d sees them, with multiple causes and multiple effects—-where all details of life fit into one grand unified scheme—–where everything is significant and complimentary and interconnected and inter included—-where the past and future all come together in the present—-where everything in your life and in the world is carefully guided—-where nothing limits or obstructs anything else [even that which seems to be divisive , full of conflict and full of darkness , are actually essential building blocks of Allness]—–where everything is in a constant state of becoming—becoming better, broader and more full of allness—-where everything is new and now and unique and possible and limitless and all fits into the unity and allness of it all
Become Allness…………..Awaken the allness of your being……Awaken fully the 24\7 Divine based consciousness of being fused with G-d—of having an empowered will/Ratzon—of being connected to an infinite flow of wisdom—–of being fully connected to your emotions—of being fully connected to your faculties of communication and decisive action…..Awaken fully your higher Soul as well as the child within you…..experience fully all levels of consciousness and awareness—-awareness of your body, awareness of your resources, awareness of your Soul, awareness of the past , present and future, awareness of clear and obvious inner drives, as well as those which are more subtle and hidden—–awareness of yourself as well as the people of your life and your respective influences on each other——awareness of your strengths and weaknesses and lackings —–awarenesses of the main purposes that you are here for in this life—-what you’ve come to fix up in your self and in others—what you’re driven to become and to accomplish…..Be open to be in your allness at all times and in all ways….BE ALLNESS
Use Allness as your core motivation…………….. See how the main measuring rod of the quality of your life, is the extent that you are fully self actualized and self expressed and in your allness…..notice how you scream yes and you jump out of bed in the morning when you are to engage in an activity that will allow you to be in your allness…..Notice how one of the most important factors of many decisions that you make, is how full of allness you will be in a certain direction that you are trying to decide upon……Notice how being in allness, is being connected to the core of your being—-and how that core-state naturally drives all of the rest of your personality functions—such as your beliefs, pleasures, will, wisdom, creativity, speech, emotions and actions…..experience how your feelings of allness actually op0en up an inner drive to connect to deeper and deeper allness levels…
Manifest Allness……………..See how the allness inside of yourself manifests allness outside of yourself…..see how the more that you fill yourself up with allness, the more that you attract allness people into your life….see how the more that you open up your eyes to see G-d’s Allness, the more G-d reveals to you with the passage of time…….see that the more that you focus on awakening your own allness, the more allness levels are opened up to you to become and to accomplish…..see how the more that you open yourself to allness, and the more that you decide decisions because of their allness value, the more that people, situations, Divine Providence and possible opportunities are presented to you, filling your life up with allness…….notice how all of the powers of the persona inside of you, have correspondences in the world outside of yourself, and the deeper that you activate the former, the more miraculously and powerfully do the latter manifest…..see how the more effort that you put into becoming a beacon of allness, the less effort you need to put into manifesting miracles in your life…..
blessings of Allness,
I’m home B’H!
My trip was amazing and full of;
Meditating to let in the Soul and
Connecting with new communities and
Investing in old friends and
Bonding with new friends and
Trying to be an adaptable, flexible traveler and
Trying to be worry-free and anxiety-free and
Discovering the ‘PARADOX PRINCIPLE’ and
Trying to convey nuclear bite sized teachings and
And now I’m back, recovering and wondering where have I been and how that influences where am I going to, and one of the first specific explorations that this has led me to is—– the exploration of truth….after all , I tried in my many encounters with people on my trip, to somehow represent and convey a deeper truth to them….but now that I’m back home, and spending most all of my time alone, I’m no longer ‘on stage’, but rather, inside of the classroom of life, and therefore , as a full time learner, I’m moved to explore both what I already know [because unless we make an effort to know what we know, it most likely remains unknown to us ] as well as what I don’t yet know….so here is my latest exploration/presentation which I’ll call [first I’ll bring ‘what I know’—ie…TRUTH TEACHINGS that I have already brought in the past, and afterwards [this week or next] some new stuff-‘what I don’t yet Know’;
IN SEARCH OF TRUTH
TRUTH MEASURING APPROACHES
******Use these approaches as gauges to check the truth value of any principle, decision or piece of wisdom that you encounter.
A. TRUTH STANDS THE TEST OF TIME.
This verse in Proverbs states “The expression of truth stands forever.” Our Sages teach, “Falsehood has legs to stand on”, i.e. staying power. Does it stand up to the test of time? Though you can’t know this ingredient of the real truth of anything until a reasonably considerable amount of time will pass in the future, nevertheless you can compare any similar phenomenon that occurred in the past. If it stood the test of time, so can your present topic at hand.
B. TRUTH RESONATES AND BREEDS HOLINESS.
Our Sages interpret the verse “Distance yourself from falseness” thusly; Falseness distances you from Hashem. You can feel or resonate with the Divine Truth in a situation, statement or idea… not only does it feel to be something that Hashem would approve of, but also you’ll find yourself being drawn to think, feel, speak and act out in a Holy way. Falseness produces the opposite results (the higher that you go in Kabbalah’s spiritual worlds or soul levels, the more Divinity and Truth will you experience).
C. TRUTH IS RECOGNIZED IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF DECEIT AS LIGHT IS IN DARKNESS.
Our Sages also teach that our world is a world of the hiddenness of G-d’s presence (the word “Olam” which means world comes from the Hebrew root for hidden). An even stronger expression offered is that this world is a “world of lies or deceptions” (Alma D’shikra). In a world of lies or deception, the truth, by contrast is very apparent and recognized. (Our sages’ phrase is Emet Nikeret – the Truth is recognized). This power of truth to be recognized in darkness is manifest in the trait of authenticity, where a person fearlessly shines forth the “real me” – even when it would be more comfortable to stay hidden behind their politically correct facade!! Integrity also is an attractive trait where people recognize in the person that they prefer to be courageously truthful rather than comfortably deceitful.
D. TRUTH IS ACCESSED BY SEEING THE WHOLE PICTURE.
The Kabbalists teach that truth is one of the traits of the sefira of Tiferet. Tiferet is the sefira that bridges or connects together all the rest of the sefirot of the personality – those above it (the spiritual and intellectual) with those below it (the actual), those to the right of it (the expansive and free-flowing traits) with those to the left of it (the constrictive and limiting traits). In other words, it takes into account the whole picture. Other similar areas that fall into this category are: 1. Torah – the truth that encompasses all elements 2. A judge – needs to rule based on all the factors 3. A Halachic “Poseik” (Authority) – needs to decide based on all the factors 4. Our forefather Jacob – the patriarch who embodied all sides of life, the spiritual with the physical bridged in all areas of life 5. My good friend’s constant advice in times of being confused about which direction to go was, “Go up to a higher level and see the whole picture – and then everything will fit into its proper place.”
E. KEEP PURSUING THE TRUTH UNTIL YOU GET IT.
“Pursue the Truth.” The Truth by its nature is something like Divinity itself that is hidden and makes itself increasingly available to a person according to their determination to get it!!
COPING WITH DECEPTION APPROACHES
1. MIRRORING THE DECEIVER
King David [in the 2nd ‘Book of Shmuel’ Ch. 22, verses 26-27] teaches this mirroring -principle stating, ‘ With a righteous person, be righteous…with a ‘tam’, be a ‘tam’…with a pure person, be pure…and with a crooked person, be crooked.’
Carry this approach out by simply mirroring ….Be very very careful not to fall into the trap of becoming a deceiver yourself…Hold onto your inner purity in all situations that you find yourself in
2. LIVING IN A HIGHER REALM
Here’s a simple tool that’s do-able and with a lot of persistence, can truly help you to see a world that’s unified and rectifiable, and allows you the ability to cope with some of the toughest people and challenges. You’ve possibly heard me at previous times bring this tool, but I bring it again because its application at this point is very appropriate. It’s called the ‘Mikve Tool’, and here’s what you do: Simply dunk yourself into a real or imagined body of water. While dunking, say to yourself, that all that’s recently happened to you is the best possible thing in the world for you. Then bring up into your mind a specific negative or painful experience that you have had recently. Come up for air and then dunk again and say to yourself that the reason why this experience is the best possible thing that could’ve happened to you, is because________ and wait for an answer to come in to your mind. The answer usually has something to do with the rectification of your personality or soul, such as a need to be more humble, loving, believing…etc…
3. BE A RADICAL ‘TAM’ IN THE FACE OF DECEPTION
****The point here, is that one’s ‘t-a-m ness’ will draw down a Divine-based-protective-force-field, and sometimes will even transform the deceiver into becoming a bit of a ‘tam’ also…Anyway here’s a few basic steps in ‘Tam-ing’;
A. Be radically authentic—–what you express on the outside, should be a reflection of what you feel on the inside…
B. Be radically happy with your lot.
C. Make ‘HOLY SIMPLICITY’ your primal value and ‘Modus operandi’ in life….this includes all areas of life; how you interact with people, with Hashem and with life itself…[Don’t forget what the Breslov Chassidim are fond of saying, ‘it’s not simple to be simple! And don’t forget what the Kabbalists are fond of saying ‘Simplicity is in the highest Sefirotic realm of ‘KETER’]….
A. Identify your strongest points. For example, you may be and feel outstanding in the realm of spirituality or learning or emoting or being creative or getting ‘results’…
B. Leverage or utilize this strong point[s] of yours when you are in the heat of an encounter with a deceptive person [rather than having to distance yourself from them]….
C. For example, if you’re a lover of wisdom, impress upon the deceptive one how fascinated you are by their depth and breadth of wisdom. Hopefully this will steer them away from feeling challenged by you and therefore needing to deceive you…
Escape when you need to escape in order to protect yourself. Get a good lawyer if necessary. Included in this ‘escape clause’ is the ability to not allow the deceiver to trap you into an abusive type of relationship or dynamic that they themself created, in order to always keep you defensive and under their control….
meanwhile, until next time;
